Gary Coleman

I saw the most recent news about Gary Coleman today. It’s hard to know what to say. When they came on Divorce Court a couple of seasons ago they came NOT because they wanted a divorce but because they wanted help with their issues. He is a smart guy. Smarter than a lot of people give him credit for. He knew they were having troubles and wanted to get out in front of them.

Unfortunately, there is no one thing you can say to somebody to clear up years of issues. What I tried to get him to do is see what efforts he needed to make on an ongoing basis to change his outlook. He needed to change his pattern of emotional response. He needed outside help to do it.

All the love in the world (which I do believe he has for his wife) is not a substitute for being able to control your impulses. Anger had become such a habit for him, a ‘go to’ default response. He did not want it to define their relationship.

I don’t know what the warrant is for and I am mindful that a warrant is just that, an invitation to the proceedings, so to speak, not a finding of guilt. Whatever happens I hope he makes the decision to work on his anger and I hope that his wife has the support she needs to do what is safe for her while he handles his issues.
